REPORT ON XXXV ONTA REUNION
GUAYAQUIL, ECUADOR, JULY 21-25, 2003
The 35th Annual ONTA Reunion was held at the Hilton Colon Hotel in Guayaquil, Ecuador, 21-25 July 2003. The meeting was organized by Jenny Escobar chair of the Local Arrangements Committee (LAC) with the assistance of LAC members (Carlos Cortez, Marcela Escallón, Tarcisio Mosquera, Betty Tello and Carmen Triviño). This scientific event was sponsored by BASF, BAYER CROPSCIENCE, CORPORACION NOBOA, DOLE, DuPONT, FMC, LAVERLAM and SYNGENTA. Other contributors were ALEX SALAZAR-ART DESIGNER, ANDEAN ROSES and GARDENIA’s TROPICAL FLOWERS. The scientific program was prepared by Renato Crozzoli, Jenny Escobar and Forest Robinson. ONTA members wish to congratulate and thank the organizers who made this scientific event a reality. The meeting was attended by 92 nematologists and accompanying persons from 14 countries.
The meeting was a success for the quality of the scientific program and for the pleasant and warm hospitality provided by local planners in Guayaquil. The agricultural excursion organized by NOBOA Corporation enriched the program and enlightened the participants on production practices and nematode management adopted in the industrial banana plantations in Ecuador. During the excursion, the participants had the opportunity to become acquainted with the major tropical crops grown in the lowland areas of Guayaquil. The program of the meeting included an excellent banquet. ONTA acknowledges and thanks Jenny Escobar and the LAC members for making this scientific event a memorable experience for the participants to the meeting.
EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING
The Executive Committee (EC) met on July 22, 2003 at 7:46 PM (Hotel Hilton Colon, Guayaquil, Ecuador). The meeting was opened by President Forest Robinson. Attending were Erwin Aballay, Manuel Canto-Saenz, Aurelio Ciancio, Renato Crozzoli, Jenny Escobar, Renato Inserra, Juan Carlos Magunacelaya, Jim Rich, Rodrigo Rodríguez-Kábana and Soledad Verdejo-Lucas. S. Verdejo-Lucas was appointed ad hoc Secretary.
The minutes of the previous meeting were approved following a motion by F. Robinson and seconded by R. Inserra. The President presented his report of activities along with those of the other members of the Executive Committee, viz. Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Business Manager, and editors of Nematropica and the Newsletter.
It was announced that the Secretary of ONTA, Peggy King, would retire within the next 12 months, necessitating that someone else be elected by the society membership to replace her. In response, Nicola Greco indicated he would be available to be a candidate for the position.
It was also noted that Charles Weaver, Nematropica’s ONTA’s long standing Business Manager, would retire in January of 2004, and that it was the charge of the Editor in Chief of Nematropica to name a new Manager. J. Rich indicated he would be available to assume this responsibility, if needed.
Committee Reports were distributed and discussion followed. The President informed the members that Luis Payan was recommended as the new Chair of the Sustaining Members Committee.
J. Rich pointed out that in the ONTA Foundation financial statement the current funds total approximately $23,000. He also noted that he personally had continued to fund the ONTA Home Page, but future consideration should be given for ONTA to fund the web site. It was discussed and agreed by all present that the Editor of the Home Page should be a member of the Executive Committee. F. Robinson promised to write the needed text modifications for the Constitution, which then would be subject to approval by the Executive Committee and the members of ONTA.
J. Rich noted that the Old Newsletters should be scanned and archived on the ONTA Home Page. Volunteers would be needed for this effort to be successful.
It was agreed that all reports of the members of the Executive Committee and the Committees would be displayed publicly before the business meeting the following Thursday (July 24) to permit examination by ONTA members present.
It was announced that N. Marbán-Mendoza will chair the Local Arrangements Committee for the next Reunion, to take place in Mexico in October of 2004. E. Aballay, of the University of Santiago, Chile, invited ONTA to meet in his country in 2005, and he was appointed Chair of the Local Arrangements Committee for 2005. The Executive Committee discussed issues of the date and specific site within Chile and reached the consensus that Erwin and Juan Carlos (who now is Vice President and will be President during the meeting in Chile) should discuss these issues with colleagues in Chile and make the final decision themselves as soon as possible, regarding the precise date and ideal site within Chile.
Other matters discussed included a proposal by M. Canto-Saenz for ONTA to organize a Nematology Course to be held in Peru. This course would have characteristics similar to the course held in Venezuela. It would be held on repeated occasions with the first one targeted for 2005, and would consist of theoretical classes offered via real-time remote education technology, in conjunction with practical laboratory classes on site. Manuelproposed that the course be given in the Spanish language with adjustments for non Spanish-speaking instructors where needed, to allow students who will be largely Spanish-speaking to focus 100% of their attention on learning the science. An ad hoc committee to study the proposal was appointed with M. Canto-Saenz as chair and Antonio Bello, Ignacio Cid del Prado, R. Crozzoli, N. Marbán-Mendoza, Julia Meredith, and R. Rodríguez-Kábana as members.
R. Rodríguez-Kábana reported that he had numerous copies of Nematropica back volumes, which he no longer can keep in storage. He proposed to place an announcement on the ONTA Home Page listing the journal issues available. Rodrigo further volunteered to prepare parcel post packages for one-time shipments of back volumes to ONTA country representatives, for them in turn to distribute among their colleagues. Funding for this project was not discussed, and so it should be assumed that ONTA would pay the cost of shipping.
With no additional issues, the meeting was adjourned at 8:55 pm.
ONTA BUSINESS MEETING
The Business Meeting chaired by President Forest Robinson was held on July 24, 2003, at 12:45 p.m. (Hotel Hilton Colon, Guayaquil, Ecuador). He welcomed everyone to Guayaquil and appointed a Parliamentarian (Rodrigo Rodríguez-Kábana). Soledad Verdejo-Lucas agreed to act as secretary.
The minutes of the previous meeting had been posted publicly before the Business Meeting to allow reading by the membership. Jim Rich motioned, seconded by Manuel Canto-Saenz, that the minutes be approved as posted, and the motion passed.
A minute of silence was observed to honor deceased colleagues (Miguel Costilla, Federico Dao, Aballah Navel Charec, Alain Kermarrec and Walter Thames).
The President gave his report of activities and thanked Vice President Renato Crozzoli and Local Arrangements Chair Jenny Escobar for their excellent job in preparing the scientific program for the Guayaquil meeting. He reported also that R. Rodríguez-Kábana had worked very hard with him in representing ONTA on the Council of the International Federation of Nematology Societies (IFNS). He noted that ONTA had two votes in IFNS and expressed the hope that the tradition of the ONTA President and one other long-standing ONTA member serving on the IFNS council would continue, suggesting that the representatives for the upcoming year could be President R. Crozzoli and R. Rodríguez-Kábana.
Remaining members of the Executive Committee or their representatives gave reports as appropriate.
Forest announced that the ONTA Secretary, Peggy King, would retire during the next year, necessitating the election of a replacement. He also noted the upcoming retirement of ONTA Business Manager Charles Weaver, who also would have to be replaced.
Forest recommended that President R. Crozzoli appoints Luis Payan as Chair of the Sustaining Members Committee.
He reported that the Nominations Committee, chaired by Patrick Quénéhervé, had assembled 12 nominees for the position of Vice President, from which the Executive Committee had selected two, Aurelio Ciancio andJuan Carlos Magunacelaya, with the latter receiving the greater number of votes in the election by the ONTA membership.
Jim Rich made a motion that the web site editor be made a member of the Executive Committee. The motion was seconded by S. Verdejo-Lucas and passed. F. Robinson would write text necessary to introduce a modification in the ONTA Constitution that would have to be approved by the members of the Organization.
Nahum Marbán-Mendoza made a motion to officially thank the Local Arrangements Committee consisting of J. Escobar as chair, along with Carlos Cortés, Marcela Escallón, Tarcisio Mosquera, Carmen Triviño andBetty Tello. The motion was approved and the Committee congratulated for its excellent work.
It was announced that ONTA will meet in Mexico in October 2004 (exact dates to be announced) by invitation from N. Marbán-Mendoza, who later presented a video at the end of the Business Meeting of the hotel complex in Puerto Vallarta where the meeting will take place.
Erwin Aballay invited ONTA to meet in Chile in 2005 probably during the Chilean spring (last four months of the calendar year) and acceptance of his invitation was endorsed unanimously. M. Canto-Saenz presented a proposal to hold a series of Nematology courses organized by ONTA in Peru. The course design would have characteristics similar to the one held in Venezuela and would consist of theory classes organized remotely and practical classes in situ, with much material in the Spanish language. The first of the courses would be held in 2005. It was noted the Executive Committee had agreed to create an ad hoc committee to study the proposal, consisting of M. Canto as chair, Antonio Bello, Ignacio Cid del Prado, R. Crozzoli, N. Marbán-Mendoza, Julia Meredith and R. Rodríguez-Kábana.
R. Rodríguez-Kábana reported that he has numerous back volumes of Nematropica in storage at Auburn, which he needs to dispose. For this, he volunteers to send boxes containing back volumes to one representative in each country where there is interest, to be distributed at each representative’s discretion. R. Rodríguez-Kábana requested that those persons interested in obtaining back issues contact him by e-mail. It also was proposed to list the volumes available in an ONTA web site announcement. Antonio Bello requested that a complete set of Nematropica be sent to the Museum of Natural History in Madrid.
The outgoing President, F. Robinson, turned over his post to President-Elect, R. Crozzoli, who presented Forest with the ONTA Past President Award. Renato expressed his appreciation to Forest and Jenny for the assistance obtained in the preparation of the scientific program. The new President Elect Juan Carlos Magunacelaya replaced Renato as the new Vice President.
With no more business, the meeting was adjourned at 13:20.
ONTA AWARDS
The ONTA awardees for 2002-2003 were introduced to the delegates by Forest Robinson during the ONTA banquet (July 24, 2003). They were Manuel Canto-Saenz and Nahum Marbán Mendoza who received theHonorary Member Award; Kenneth (Ken) Evan and Franco Lamberti who received the Special Award; and Juan Carlos Magunacelaya who received the Bayer CropScience Ecuador S.A. Award (formerly Rhône-Poulenc Award). A Certificate of Appreciation was presented by ONTA to Jenny Escobar and the local Arrangements Committee for their role in organizing the XXXXV Annual Meeting in Guayaquil, Ecuador.
No best student paper/poster competition awards were given because of lack of participating international students and the local students did not wish to compete among themselves. The members of the Honors and Awards and Local Arrangements Committees and the donor, R. Rodríguez-Kábana, agreed that the money to support the student competition in 2003 would be held over until the ONTA meeting in Mexico in 2004.
FUTURE ONTA MEETINGS
Nahum Marbán Mendoza (Chair of the Local Arrangement Committee) informs us that the 36th ONTA meeting will be held at the Hotel Krystal, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, October 4-8, 2004. Estimated accommodation prices range from US $100 to $130 for a double room and from US $60 to 70 for a single room. Registration fees will be announced later.
The 37th ONTA meeting will be held in Chile during the last four months of calendar year 2005, which is springtime in Chile. Dates and locale are to be decided later. Erwin Aballay is chairman of the Local Arrangement Committee.
EUROPEAN SOCIETY OF NEMATOLOGISTS (ESN)
Teresa Bleve, ESN president, informs us that the XXVII ESN International Symposium will be held in Rome, Italy, June 14-18, 2004. ATTENTION AUTHORS – ‘ELECTRONIC’
PUBLICATION IN NEMATROPICA
Scientific manuscripts can now be published in NEMATROPICA ‘electronically’ with the added benefit that no page charges apply to ONTA members!! Manuscripts are still submitted to the Editor-in Chief, Ed McGawley<ecmcgawley@agctr.lsu.edu>, for ordinary handling but the submission must be made on a computer disk or attached to an email. All manuscripts will be processed as usual including peer reviews, author proofs, format, etc. The only difference is that the papers will be published and accessed ‘electronically’ and not published in ‘hardcopy’. However, your publication title and citable page numbers will appear in the NEMATROPICA paper copy (hardcopy) with instructions to access and print the publication. Announcement of the very first NEMATROPICA ‘electronic’ paper, written by a pioneer Nematologist, A.L. Taylor (deceased), appears in December 2003 volume (note that only the title is listed with access instructions).
Technical questions on electronic publication should be posed to Larry Duncan, <lwdn@ifas.ufl.edu> who has agreed to serve in the position of Coordinator of the electronic version of NEMATROPICA. His duties will be to act as a liaison for electronic publication among the editor-in-chief, printer and Florida Center for Library Automation (FCLA). He will make sure that the PDF files are delivered promptly by the printer to FCLA as soon as a given NEMATROPICA issue is completed. In addition, he will assure that all articles published online are complete and are accurately formatted. Check out this exciting new method of information delivery for ONTA members!!
ONTA EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE COMPOSITION
(OPEN DISCUSSION TO ONTA MEMBERS)
A preliminary exchange of views on the composition of ONTA Executive Committee has been initiated due to: 1) a move to add other members (e.g. ONTA WEB Editor), 2) questions as to whether some appointed positions should be included (e.g. Business Manager), and 3) inconsistencies in official listings compared to the intent of the ONTA Constitution. These have led to some confusion as to the composition of the Executive Committee, particularly when voting on issues of importance to ONTA. Jim Rich has proposed that EC membership and voting rights should be clearly defined plus open discussions made for any other changes that may be needed. He previously opened a dialogue with Forest Robinson (Immediate Past President), Julia Meredith (Honorary Member), Renato Crozzoli (Current President) and Renato Inserra (Newsletter Editor). The group provided the following suggestions as a starting point for further discussion by all ONTA members: the Executive Committee (EC) should consist of the President, Vice President, Past President, Secretary, Treasurer, Nematropica Editors (English and Spanish), Newsletter Editor-in-Chief and two Members at Large appointed by the President. The ONTA Web Editor should also be included as a member of the EC as approved at the ONTA Business meeting in Guayaquil, Ecuador. The Nematropica Business Manager should not be a member of the EC (note: both adding the ONTA Web Editor to the EC and deleting the Business Manager requires a constitutional amendment). Only members of the EC or their duly appointed representatives (one per member) should be allowed to vote on EC matters and each member should have only one vote. The President should have the authority to invite anyone she/he wants to the EC meeting and to allow any EC member to appoint a representative with voting authority if she/he cannot attend. However, each EC member would still only be allowed one vote. All ONTA members are and should be welcomed at EC meetings and shall have a right to speak. However, these participants may voice their opinion but do not vote. NEWS FROM COLOMBIA
Gladys E. Múnera Uribe (Colombian Corporation of Agricultural Investigations–CORPOICA) has provided the following news from Colombia.
Nematologists in Colombia have been active participants in ONTA scientific events since the inception of the organization. One of the earliest ONTA meetings was organized in Bogotá in 1970. The International MeloidogyneProject (IMP), in the mid and late 70s, promoted numerous studies on applied Nematology. These projects were conducted by nematologists R. Barriga, O. Guerrero, R. Navarro and F. Varón. Unfortunately, many other nematologists (R. Jurado, L. Nieto and G. Rondón) are now deceased. In recent years, G. Múnera, R. Navarro, F. Varón and Ch. Volcy are the scientists involved in nematological work in Colombia. The scientific activity of these nematologists includes research concerning nematode management on soybean, ornamentals and fruit trees. These research projects are part of an Integrated Pest Management program which provides funds for advanced training in nematode taxonomy for young scientists.
NEWS FROM SAINT LUCIA
As editor of the Newsletter, I would like to thank Simon Gowen for facilitating my contacts with Joseph Edsel (Eddie) Edmunds of Saint Lucia. I have prepared this short report on the activities of Eddie by using the electronic correspondence that we have exchanged recently. Eddie is an eminent nematologist who became involved in diplomatic endeavors. After obtaining a PhD in Nematology from Cornell University in 1965, Eddie was involved in tropical Nematology and acquired expertise on diseases of banana caused by various pathological agents and especially by nematodes. He is one of the founders of our organization which he led as President in 1970. In 1975, he organized the 8th ONTA annual meeting held in Castries, Saint Lucia. Eddie is a well respected nematologist, a species of needle nematode was named after his last name, Longidorus edmundsi (Hunt and Siddiqi. 1977).
Because of his expertise on banana diseases, Eddie became a consultant and advisor for international programs concerning research on banana diseases, pest management and production in African Countries, the South Pacific and Caribbean. In 1979, he initiated his political and diplomatic career as a Saint Lucia Senator, and in 1984, was appointed Ambassador to the United States and the Organization of American States and the United Nations. He held this office until 1997. During those years, he dedicated his energies for the enhancement of democracy and social programs in Latin America. After his diplomatic career, he has continued to contribute to social programs and democratic initiatives in the Caribbean and Latin America as an international consultant. In addition to his nematological and diplomatic skills, Eddie is an artist and sculptor. He also writes poetry. We hope thatEddie will continue his involvement in Nematology and ONTA.
