ONTA NEWSLETTER
ORGANIZATION OF NEMATOLOGISTS OF TROPICAL AMERICA
NOVEMBER 1999 VOLUME 30 (2)
SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO JUNE 20 – 25, 1999
In addition to the excellent scientific program, the participants enjoyed comfortable accommodation at the Condado Plaza Hotel and an outstanding reception offered by the Local Arrangement Committee (LAC). Delegates were treated to a night of folk music, dances, and traditional Puerto Rican food. The Agricultural Tour was particularly interesting as it provided the opportunity to see aspects of tropical PR agriculture and also some characteristic ecological sites of preserved natural areas. The joint banquet was opened by the PR National Symphonic Orchestra playing a selection of classical works. A highlight of the banquet was a brief, illustrated address by the Secretary of Agriculture of Puerto Rico, Dr. Miguel Muñoz.He emphasized the economic importance of past and present crops grown on the island and the current changes and future agriculture goals necessary for PR to achieve in order to maintain its place in the changing Caribbean and world economy. The banquet evening was closed by sounds of the members’ feet swirling around the floor as they kept rhythm to the music of a popular dance band. ONTA founding members, Alejandro Ayala and Jessé Román, and their wives Providencia and Zaida were on hand throughout the event.
ONTA expresses sincere appreciation to the LAC for a job well done. Special thanks go to the LAC members Roberto Vargas (chair for ONTA) and Rodrígo Echávez Badel (chair for APS-CD), José A. Chavarría, Lidya I. Rivera Vargas, Evelyn Rosa, Angel Cuyar, Miguel Dávila, Sandra Suárez, Rafael Inglés, and to the other persons who made this meeting so successful.
1) Approval of the minutes of the XXX Reunion held in Mendoza, Argentina in 1998.2) Approval of the report by Nematropica’s editor, Larry Duncan, who informed the members about the reasons for the delay in the publication of the issues of Nematropica. Most delay was caused by the “back-up” of journals at the printer, not only of Nematropica but other journals as well. Two issues, December 1998-vol. 28 (2), and June 1999 -vol 29 (1) would be ready and distributed to the members in October 1999. He added, also, that papers in French and Portuguese would be published in the year 2000 issues.3) Approval of the reports of ONTA Committees (Business Manager, Newsletter, Nominating, ONTA Home Page, and Treasurer).
4) Approval of the report by the chairman of the Local Arrangements Committee, Roberto Vargas, who stated that the joint meeting was attended by 50 ONTA members, 37 APS-CD members and 39 non-members. All expenses for the meeting were covered by the registration fees and generous sponsor contributions.
5) Approval of a short report by Antonio Bello concerning the Fourth International Nematology Congress which will be held in Tenerife, Canary Islands, in 2002.
6) Approval of the invitation by Rodrigo Rodríguez-Kábana, chariman, Local Arrangements Committee for the XXXII ONTA Annual Reunion, which will be held at Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama, U.S.A., April 16-20, 2000.
7) Approval of the invitation by Lourdes Sánchez to hold the XXXIII ONTA Annual Reunion in Varadero, Cuba, June 11-15, 2001.
Durning the meeting, recognition was given to the professional activities of Carlos Sosa-Moss. Rosa Manzanilla-López presented a commemorative report of the research, teaching, and extension programs conducted byCarlos during his life.
At the end of the meeting Elena Dagnino introduced the new ONTA president, Manual Mundo-Ocampo.
During the ONTA banquet, Rodrigo Rodríguez-Kábana, chairman of the Honors and Awards Committee, introduced the ONTA awardees for 1998-1999. They were Robert McSorley who received the Honorary member Award, Renato Inserra who received the Distinguished Service Award, and Gregory Noel who received the Rhoône-Poulenc Award.

In 1980, he left the Brazilian Institute of Coffee Research to become a professor of plant nematology in a new teaching and research position created at the College of Agruculture of Sao Paulo State University in Botucatu, where he received his BS degree. Anário was a dedicated scientist and an excellent professor. He trained many undergraduate and graduate students in Brazil. His applied nematological work on fruit crops such as coffee and citrus is welll known in Brazil and also internationally. He traveled frequently in South America and maintained professional and friendly contacts with nematologists of Latin America and other parts of the world. His cordial spirit of collaboration was appreciated greatly by his colleagues. Anário was well known by ONTA members, especially in South America. He was a member of our organization and participated in many ONTA reunions. His friendship and skills will be surely missed. He was survived by his wife Sonia and his daughter Alicia.

PASSING
We are sad to report the premature death of Dr. María Magdalena A. de Doucet occured on September 6, 1999.María Magdalena A. de Doucet was a prestigious contributor to our journal Nematropica and a renowned scientist for her research on entompathogenic nematodes. She was married to Marcelo Doucet, who is a very active ONTA member. The editors of this Newsletter had the fortune to know Magdalena and to appreciate her pleasant disposition, kindness, and nematological knowledge. Sincere condolences are extended to Marcelo Doucet and his children. An obituary for maría Magdalena will be included in the next issue of the Newsletter.
OTHER NEWS
Dr. Robert P. Esser, well known nematologist, zoologist, and naturalist, retired from his position at the Division of Plant Industry, Nematology Section, Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Gainesville Florida U.S.A., on October 1, 1999. He had worked at the Department of Agruculture since 1954. In addition to his work at the Section of Nematology, Bob (as he was known to his many ONTA friends and colleagues) collaborated with several courses at the University of Florida. He was a tireless worker, biological observer, and inverntor of many useful nematological devices and techniques. Bob Essser’s particular humor, unique ways, and approach to common matters will be long remembered and probably never equaled. ONTA members wish him good health and well being as he begins his retirement adventures.

BALLOT
PROPOSAL FOR ONTA CONSTITUTIONAL CHANGE
(Submitted By Forest A. Robinson)
Article 1-Membership.
Section I. Classes of Membership.
Paragraph C. Honorary Member. A person who has made outstanding contributions to the Science of Nematology or to ONTA. No more than three percent of the total active membership may be elected as Honorary Mambers.
The proposed wording is:
Paragraph C. Honorary Member. A person who has made outstanding contributions to the Science of nematology ot to ONTA. No more than three percent of the total active membership may be elected as Honorary Members, unless the Executive Committee unanimously agrees otherwise.
Rational: By adding the clause “unless the Executive Committee unanimously agrees otherwise”it will be possible to give a highly deserving member of ONTA a Honorary Membership even though 3% of the members are already Honorary Members. This action may be desirable when retired Honorary Members have taken new directions in their lives and as a result rarely participate in ONTA activities. Requiring unanimous agreement by the Executive Committee will ensure that exceptions to the 3% rule are made only under exceptional circumstances and thus preserve the prestige of the Honorary Membership Award.
