As announced in the previous issue of the ONTA Newsletter, the 33rd ONTA Meeting will be organized within the context of the 4th International Scientific Seminar on Plant Health, which will take place at the International Convention Center “Plaza America”, Varadero, Cuba from June 11-15th, 2001. In addition to the 33rd ONTA Reunion, the Seminar includes the following meetings:

Each meeting will be held in separate sessions; however, plenary sessions for discussion of common interdisciplinary topics of general interest for the participants are planned.
Deadline for submission of the abstracts and registration for members of ONTA and other participating Societies is March 30, 2001. The International airport of Havana, Cuba, can be reached from major European, Canadian, and Latin American cities.

ONTA MEMBERS FROM THE U.S. : In order to go to Cuba, ONTA members from the U.S. face more bureaucratic procedures than members from other countries. United States citizens traveling to Cuba for scientific reasons need to sign an affidavit and also an application form for a temporary visa to enter Cuba. So far, Marazul Tours has provided good travel services for U.S. scientists attending scientific meetings in Cuba. This agency takes care of the travel documentation and the air ticket.
Similar services can be obtained from other authorized travel agencies.
CURRENCY AND CREDIT CARDS
The U. S. dollar is the only currency accepted in Cuba. ONTA members outside the United States should convert their currency to U. S. dollars. No travel checks are accepted in Cuba.
Credit cards such as Master Card, VISA, CABAL, BFI, and Transcar provided by banks and financial institutions outside the U.S. are accepted in Cuba.
U. S. citizens should be aware that in Cuba they cannot use credit cards or travel checks from U.S. banks or other U.S. financial institutions. They should be prepared to pay in cash all financial transactions.
REGISTRATION
No registrations are accepted after March 30, 2001.
Registration costs before March 1, 2001, are US $ 200 for delegates, $ 120 for companions, and
$ 100 for students. After March 1 2001, penalties of $ 50 for delegates and $ 30 for companions and students are applied. A registration form can be found with this Newsletter. The registration fee entitles ONTA participants to receive a portfolio with program and abstracts and to attend the scientific sessions, social welcome, coffee breaks,
farewell party, and also the excursion on Wednesday.
ONTA members outside the U.S. can preregister by contacting representative travel agencies of MERCADU in each country. These travel agencies outside the U.S. and connected with MERCADU can make direct money transfer for the registration fees to the account 402-01-8455 in name of MERCADU’S Travel Agency at the International Financial Bank (BFI), located at the Hotel Havana Libre, Vedado, Ciudad Habana, Cuba.
Selected banks outside the U.S. also can provide this service. ONTA members from the U.S. or from countries where these Banks are not available are asked to pay the registration fee in cash upon their arrival at the registration desk of the International Convention Center in Cuba. However, in the U.S., the Travel Agency Marazul Tours Inc., which was mentioned above, has offered to handle payment of the preregistration fees for ONTA members requesting the travel services of this agency.
ACCOMMODATIONS
Rooms have been reserved at the Hotel Meliá Varadero for the delegates. Special weekly lodging packages are offered to the participants.
ONTA MEMBERS FLYING DIRECTLY TO VARADERO : Accommodation costs for ONTA members flying directly to Varadero are US $ 508 or $ 608 per person, for 6 nights/7 days in a single room with breakfast only or with breakfast and dinner, respectively. The cost of the same package per person for a double room is US $ 358 or $ 458. The cost of the same package per person for 7 nights/8 days is US $ 538 and $ 646 for a single room and US $ 408 and $ 485 for a double room. Transportation from the Hotel to the airport is included.
ONTA MEMBERS FLYING TO HAVANA: Costs for ONTA members flying to Havana are US
$ 688 and $ 806 per person for 7nights/8days accommodation in a single room with breakfast only or with breakfast and dinner, respectively. The cost of the same package is US $ 483 and $ 599 per person, for a double room. This package includes one day accommodation in Havana and also the transportation costs from the hotel to the airport and from Havana to Varadero and viceversa. Lodging package should be reserved no later that 21 days before the meeting. Payment of lodging package can be made by ONTA members with the same procedures listed above for the payment of the registration fee. The travel agency Marazul Tours Inc. has offered to handle the payment of the accommodation package for ONTA members from the U.S. requesting the travel services of this agency. A hotel reservation form is found with this Newsletter.
ABSTRACTS
Abstracts in English or Spanish for the scientific sessions (oral, poster or invited presentations)
should be formatted, single spaced, in MS Word 95 or 97, Times New Roman font, 12 pt. proportional spacing and right margin alignment is requested. The abstract text should not exceed 250 words. Capitalize in bold all words in the title, use small bold letters for authors names and addresses. Underline the name of the author presenting the work. Use italic characters for scientific binomials.

GUIDELINES FOR THE ABSTRACT:
GENETIC DIVERSITY OF PHYTOPLASMAS ASSOCIATED WITH SUGARCANE YELLOW LEAF SYNDROME (YLS) IN CUBA. Y. Arocha, E. L. Peralta, and P. Jones. Plant Pathology Department, National Center of Plant and Animal Health (CENSA), Apdo 10, San José de las Lajas, Havana, Cuba, and IACR, Rothamsted, Harpenden, U.K. The aim of this work had been to determine the genetic variability of phytoplasmas associated to YLS in Cuba. Restriction profiles of 277 sugarcane samples, previously determined as phytoplasmas-positives, were compared using RsaI and AluI enzymes. Additionally, PCR amplification of 16-23S interegenic spacer region of four positive samples was done, and each PCR product was sequenced using ABI 310 Automatic Sequencer. Sequences were compared with those reported in Genbank database for 43 other phytoplasmas. Phylogenetic analysis was conducted making use of MEGA (Version 1.01) and CLUSTAL W Programs. Five different restriction patterns were observed when sugarcane samples were analyzed. Nevertheless, 95% of them were similar to Aster Yellow (AY) reference pattern.
Comparison of 16-23S intergenic spacer region sequences showed at least three different phytoplasmas. The first one that belongs to AY-IA subgroup, which is 98.89% homologous to parsley yellow phytoplasma. The second one, similar to Sc YLP-I from Africa (99% homology), pertaining to Western X group, and the third one, which appears to be a new subgroup of AY group, with 94.5% of homology when compared with members of AY group.
POSTERS: Suggested poster size is 0.90 x 1.00 meter (36 x 40″). The poster should contain the abstract and a condensed version of the work. Leave enough blank space to adequately separate title, authors’ names, objectives, material and methods, results and conclusions. Figures and graphs should not be smaller than 24 x 18 cm (9 5/8 x 7 1/4″). Size of the letters for the title and authors should be no less than 2.5 and 1.5 cm ( 1 x 5/8″), respectively.

NEMATROPICA
The editor of Nematropica, Larry Duncan, has provided the following information about the electronic version of Nematropica:
Nematropica volumes 1-30 (1971-2000) will be available on the internet beginning in January 2001. Access to the journal is through the ONTA Web Page (https://ontaweb.org). Articles can be located and retrieved either by citation or by browsing with an author/abstract/key-word search program. All articles can be viewed on screen and downloaded (reprints – instant reprints!). The online version of the journal is freely accessible.
The simultaneous production of Nematropica in both bound and electronic format creates some new and exciting opportunities for both authors and readers of the journal:
_ Articles published in Nematropica are now available to the widest possible audience. Scientists in any discipline can immediately locate, read, download, and cite the information. Few scientific journals enable such unrestricted dissemination of ideas and published data.
_ Thirty years of nematological research can be searched, and the original documents retrieved, without leaving your desk. The data set will be continually updated, which eliminates the need for printed indices or CDs of back issues that become increasingly obsolete with each new issue of the journal.
_ Scientists and students at institutions with limited library resources can now routinely access an international journal of nematological research. Such access to current literature will help to address a major impediment to research in developing countries.
_ Authors in Nematropica have the new option to publish exclusively online without paying page charges. Articles so published will be citable with page numbers. The title page of the appropriate bound issue will list the titles, authors and web location of these
additional articles that appear in the online version of the journal.
Nematropica went online at no initial cost to ONTA. Funds to create the electronic files of back issues were generously donated by the Entek Corporation. ONTA is particularly grateful to the Florida Center for Library Automation (FCLA) for housing the journal on its server and for countless hours of software programming, creation of PDF files, trouble shooting, and technical training, all at no charge to our Society. Electronic files of future issues will be purchased from the company that prints Nematropica.
Hopefully, you will soon have an opportunity to visit the new ONTA Web Page and browse through Nematropica. Please be critical of what you find there. The capacity to search and display 30 years worth of articles requires numerous files and a great deal of programming – far too much material to check page by page. The people at FCLA are very responsive to requests and suggestions, so please contact me (lwdn@lal.ufl.edu) if you encounter problems or if you have suggestions to improve the online version of the journal.
