XXXV ONTA REUNION GUAYAQUIL, ECUADOR, JULY 21-25, 2003

As noted in the previous issue of the Newsletter, the 35th ONTA Reunion will be held in Guayaquil, Ecuador, 21-25 July 2003. The meeting is being organized by Jenny Escobar and her Ecuadorian colleagues and will take place at the Hilton Colon Hotel in Guayaquil. The meeting will be sponsored by AGRIPAC (NO), BASF, BAYER CROPSCIENCE, NOBOA, DuPONT, FMC, INIAP-Estación Boliche, LAVERLAM, SYNGENTA and cut-flower farms of Ecuador. Formal paper and poster sessions and a field trip will be included. In addition to scientific papers sessions, Jenny and Vice President Renato Crozzoli are organizing four symposia on: I. Nematode Problems in Banana and Tropical Fruit Tree Crops (Problemas Nematológicos en el Banano y Frutales Tropicales), II. Nematode Problems in Vegetables and Legumes (Problemas Nematológicos en Hortalizas y Leguminosas), III. Biological Control of Nematodes (Control Biológico de Nematodos), and IV. Nematodes in Floriculture: Comparative Strategies for Management and MBr Replacement in Diverse Production Regions (Nematodos en Floricultura: Estrategias Comparativas para el Manejo de Nematodos y Reemplazo de BrM en Distintas Regiones Productoras).

A ‘Student Poster Competition” will be held during the first day of the meeting, with first and second place cash prizes of $500 and $300, respectively. Students can pre-register or register for the competition upon arrival at the meeting. Details about judging criteria can be obtained from G.Noel<G-NOEL1@uiuc.edu>or F. Robinson <frobinson@cpru.usda.gov>

The deadline for pre-registration for the meeting has been extended to May 31, 2003. The pre-registration fee is $250 U.S. and registration after May 31 is $300. Abstracts also should be submitted no later than May 31, 2003. ONTA members express appreciation to Jenny Escobar and her colleagues for organizing this meeting. Special recognition goes to Rodrigo Rodriguez-Kabana for funding the ‘Best Student Poster Competition Awards’ with a donation of $ 1000 to the ONTA Foundation.

Future ONTA Meetings

Erwin Aballay (University of Santiago, Chile) has extended an invitation to ONTA members to meet in Chile in 2005. The ONTA Executive Committee is discussing possible dates, Chilean sites and venues for this meeting. Further details will be available at the ONTA Reunion in Guayaquil, Ecuador.

At the Tenerife conference in 2002, the Executive Committee discussed informal invitations for the 2004 ONTA meeting from Mexico and Brazil. We hope to receive a formal invitation from at least one of these venues at Guayaquil!

Other Nematological Events

A variety of nematological events are planned world wide in July 2003 in addition to the ONTA meeting in Guayaquil, July 21-25. Among these are: 1) the 24th Congress of the Brazilian Nematology Society, June 30-July 4 at Petrolina, Pernambuco, Brazil; 2) the 16th Symposium of the Nematological Society of South Africa, July 6-11 in the Western Cape, South Africa; 3) the 42nd Annual Meeting of the Society of Nematologists, July 12-17, at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, USA; 4) the 5th International Symposium of the Russian Society of Nematologists, July 13-17, in Vladivostock, Russia.

Renata Tenente, the President of the Brazilian Nematology Society (BNS), has submitted the following information about the BNS Congress: Petrolina is ca. 750 km inland from Recife on the Rio São Francisco. The extensive irrigated agriculture of the surrounding semi-arid region produces various fruits for export including table grapes, mango, guava, coconut, banana, and pineapple. Symposia and scientific paper sessions during the Congress will examine challenges to Brazilian Nematology in nematode ecology, influence of nematodes on plant physiology, integrated management of nematodes, sustainable agriculture, quarantine legislation, and the application of molecular biology and the genetic improvement of crops to nematological problems. Lodging is available at eight local hotels ranging in price from US$ 24 to US$ 110, listed on the web site given at the end of this announcement. Congress registration fee is US$ 100. Student registration is US$ 50 if paid before 30 April 2003. The fees increase to US$ 150 and 75, respectively, if paid after that date. Congress registration payment should be made by a check drawn on a Brazilian bank or in Brazilian currency.

Abstracts for the BNS Congress in Petrolina should be accompanied by a registration form and payment and postmarked by 30 April 2003. They should be sent to Wellington Moreira, Embrapa Semi-Árido, CX. Postal 23, Petrolina-PE CEP 56302-970, BRAZIL (Tel. 87 3862-1711; Fax. 87 3862-1744; cbn2003@cpatsa.embrapa.br). Send two copies and a labeled 3.5″ diskette in MS 2000, Word 97 or Word 7.0. Abstracts should conform to the norms in Nematologia Brasileira, 2001, Vol. 25 (1):103-142, and should be in Portuguese, English, or Spanish, and contain no more than 2500 characters including title, authors names, complete address and abstract. It is requested that abstracts be written on A4 paper, with justified margins of 3.0 cm on all sides, single spaced, and in 12.0 point Times New Roman font. It is recognized, however, that in some countries, A4 paper is not available. The abstract should include introduction, methods, results, and conclusions. At least one author must be a member of the Brazilian Society of Nematology, Papers can be presented orally or as posters that measure 1 meter wide and 1.2 meters high. Poster titles should be in upper case letters, 3.0 cm tall, followed by authors, introduction, objectives, materials and methods, results and conclusions. Data should be legible from more than 2 meters distance – a minimum letter height of 9 mm is recommended. NEMATROPICA

Edward McGawley, editor-in-chief of Nematropica, informs us that the December 2002 issue of Nematropica is completed and will be out very soon. Technical problems with the printer have caused a delay in the publication of this issue. Ed also informs us that he and the Spanish editor, Soledad Verdejo-Lucas have prepared a complete revision of the instructions for contributors to the Journal. We express appreciation on behalf of ONTA members to Ed and Soledad for the hard work and time they dedicated to the preparation of the Journal.

NEWS FROM PERU

We were glad to hear that Manuel Canto-Saenz, a very active member of ONTA, was appointed Dean in the College of Agronomy at the National Agricultural University in La Molina, Lima, Peru. We congratulate Manueland wish him success in this new demanding job. Manuel will coordinate courses and research activity in the college where there are six professors conducting research and teaching in plant-breeding, entomology, plant pathology, nematology, soil and weed science. Modular courses in Plant Breeding, Plant Pathology, Crop Production, Entomology and Agricultural Innovative Technology are also provided. Programs on sustainable agriculture at Masters and Ph.D. levels are planned for the coming year. Manuel will be involved in the establishment of a new Technological Institute for agricultural extension services, with three field offices in the coastal, mountain and jungle areas of Peru.
Elsa Carbonell-Torres, who was formerly ONTA President in 1997-1998, is now in charge of The National Service for Plant and Animal Health (SENASA). Unfortunately, she is no longer involved in nematological affairs.

PASSING

Before posting this issue of the Newsletter we were informed that Alain Kermarrec passed away on April 22, 2003. Alain was an able and effective tropical nematologist and an enthusiastic promoter of ONTA activities. He was director of the Zoology and Biological Control Station, French National Institute of Agronomic Research (INRA), Pointe à Pitre, Guadeloupe, French West Indies. Alain is remembered best by ONTA members for the organization of the Third International Nematology Congress (THINC), held in Guadeloupe, in 1996. The untimely death of Alain is saddening to ONTA members and the ONTA Newsletter editors who will miss his friendship and pleasant personality. Further information concerning his passing will be provided later.

We are sad to report that Walter H. Thames passed away on Sunday, April 6, 2003. He was 85. Walter Thames was professor of Plant Pathology in the Department of Plant Science at the Texas A&M University, College Station Texas. Walter was involved in research on population dynamics and management of plant-parasitic nematodes. Before moving to Texas, Walter conducted research work as an entomologist at the University of Florida Everglades Experiment Station, Belle Glade. It is worth noting that Walter detected a population of the false root-knot nematode, Nacobbus aberrans infecting cruciferous crops in Texas. Walter Thames is survived by his wife Joanna, who receives the condolences of ONTA members.

Federico Dao D. (1928-2003)

Federico Dao D. passed away December 13, 2002. Federico was born in Barranquilla, Colombia. His parents were Colombian traders who moved to Puerto Cabello, Venezuela when Federico was an infant . Federicoattended elementary and junior schools in Puerto Cabello and completed his senior studies at the La Salle High School. After graduation, Federico enrolled in the College of Agronomy at the University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he obtained a Bachelor’s degree in 1952.

After completion of his Bachelor studies, Federico returned to Venezuela where he was employed as a consultant, and later, as director of the Plant Pathology Section of the Agricultural Extension Services funded by the Shell Corporation. During those years, he was involved in studies to validate his Bachelor’s degree with the corresponding Venezuelan degree, which he obtained in 1957. Later, he enrolled as a post-graduate student in the Department of Plant Pathology at the University of California, Berkley. In 1960, Federico received an MS degree in Plant Pathology and Nematology under the supervision of mycologist Dr. W.C. Snyder and nematologist Dr. M. Allen.

In 1962, after returning to Venezuela, Federico obtained a teaching position in Nematology in the College of Agronomy at the Central University of Venezuela in Maracay. In thelate 1960s, Federico continued his graduate studies by enrolling in a Ph. D. program in the Department of Nematology at the Agricultural University in Wageningen, The Netherlands. In 1970, he received a Ph. D. in Agricultural Sciences under the supervision of the nematologist, Dr. M. Oostenbrink. He returned to Venezuela where he was among the first Venezuelan scientists with training in nematology at the Ph. D. level. His expertise and training enabled him to obtain a professorial position in Nematology at the College of Agronomy, Central University of Venezuela in Maracay where he taught nematology from 1962-1986.

During this period of teaching and research activity Federico was involved in the preparation of specialized international nematology courses for Latin American students. These international courses were organized in collaboration with the Agricultural University, Wageningen, The Netherlands. He also taught courses in Nematology at the University of Zulia in Venezuela and at the Center for Scientific Cooperation for Latin America in Costa Rica. His international training and experience enabled him to coordinate agricultural activities sponsored by the Venezuelan government and private agencies. In the 1960s, Federico was coordinator of the Latin American Association of PlantTechnology. Later, he served as Director of Plant Protection for the Ministry of Agriculture of Venezuela and also Director of Crop Protection for the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture and was the General Director of the National Foundation for Agricultural Research in Venezuela. He was an advisor to international agricultural institutes, such as CATIE in Costa Rica.

During his career, Federico worked closely with farmers providing advice and recommendations for the management of plant pests and diseases and was a pioneer in the area of Plant Pathology as well as Nematology in Venezuela. He was particularly interested in the root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne arenaria and the potato cyst nematodes, Globodera rostochiensis. Also, he was interested in the influence of climatic factors on the biology and distribution of plant parasitic nematodes in Venezuela. In addition to nematological studies, Federico was involved in research on the protist Plasmodiophora brassicae, the causal agent of stem galls on many cruciferous crops, and also on viruses of tomato and banana.

Federico Dao D. was involved with ONTA during the formative years in the establishment of this organization and served on the Executive Committee. He was always an enthusiastic and willing participant in ONTA nematological programs. He interacted along with Gerardo Yépez and Julia Meredith, and the late ONTA president Carlos Sosa-Moss in the organization of the 6th ONTA meeting held in Maracay, Venezuela in October 1973. Federico was president of ONTA in 1973-1974 and received the ONTA Past President Award at the 7th ONTA Annual Meeting held in Riverside, California in 1974.

His generosity, enthusiasm, and desire to help students and farmers were unmatched attributes of his life. His wife was Isabel Martínez Coronel, who passed away several years earlier; accompanied him on many of his nematological endeavors. ONTA members convey their deepest condolences to his children: Federico, Antonio, Germán, Luis and Alberto.
