XXXIX ONTA REUNIO
CORDOBA, ARGENTINA

OCTOBER 29-November 2, 2007

During the 38th ONTA Meeting in Costa Rica, our Peruvian colleagues, represented by Manuel Canto Sáenz, invited ONTA members to meet in Lima, Peru, on October 22-26, 2007. In February 2007, the organizers of the meeting in Peru decided to withdraw their invitation. This decision had a traumatic effect on ONTA Executive Committee members, who were facing the possibility to cancel the 2007 meeting or to organize another meeting in one of the two sites selected at the 2005 ONTA Meeting in Chile. After numerous telephone calls and e-mails between our President Patrick Quénéhervé and the Vice-President Marcelo Doucet, it was possible to find a solution to this intricate and thorny situation. ONTA’s vice-president graciously agreed to organize on short notice the 2007 Annual Meeting in Villa Carlos Paz, at 35 Km  (22 miles) from Córdoba, Argentina.  Marcelo is assisted by Paola Lax in this endeavor.

Marcelo and Paola inform us that meeting will be held at the Hotel Portal del Lago, in the city Villa Carlos Paz, Córdoba Province. It is known as a major touristic center in Argentina and is located in the foothills of  Córdoba’s Ridge bordering San Roque Lake. The site is famous for stunning scenery, outdoor activities (jogging, boating, horse riding, etc.) and night attractions in summertime.  Villa Carlos Paz enjoys a privileged location because of its direct access to numerous natural mountain habitats as well as for its close association with the history and traditions of the Province.  The Hotel Portal del Lago is a resort that has hosted many national and international scientific and cultural events. More information about this meeting will be soon forthcoming ONTA members thank Marcelo and Paola for their interest and dedication to ONTA and its annual scientific event and convey their warmest wishes for a memorable meeting.  This tremendous effort on such short time commands our interest, enthusiasm and support.

REPORT ON THE XXXVIII
ONTA REUNION

SAN JOSE, COSTA RICA, JUNE 26-30, 2006

The 38th Annual ONTA Reunion was an outstanding meeting for the quality of the scientific program and international participation. The geographical location of the meeting and the great variety of ecological parks attracted a significant number of members involved in nematode ecology. The studies on  nematode management in banana and coffee plantations that are conducted in Costa Rica  provided a great opportunity for members, involved in Tropical Nematology, to acquire new  information on this aspect of applied nematology. A total of 128 members from North, Central, Caribbean Basin, South America and Europe attended the meeting. The European nematologists provided an excellent contribution to the scientific program of the meeting. The meeting was dedicated to Róger López Chaves who was an internationally recognized nematologist for his teaching activity, taxonomical studies and contributions to the Science of Tropical Nematology in Costa Rica. The symposia on biodiversity, biological management of nematodes, methyl bromide alternatives, precision agriculture and  the excellent oral and poster presentations provided  the  attendants with a wide range of scientific information.  The agricultural tour which included a visit to the Doka Estate coffee plantation and  interesting ecological sites enriched the scientific program of the meeting. ONTA members express their appreciation to Alejandro Esquivel (Chair of the Local Arrangement Committee) and the other members Mario Araya, Fabio Chaverri, Gustavo Fallas, Lorena Flores, and Martha Orozco for organizing this memorable meeting.  Photos of the events of this meeting are posted on the ONTA website.

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS (2007)

Jim Rich and Forest Robinson chair of the Nomination and Honors and Awards Committee, respectively, invite ONTA members to submit nominations of candidates for the election of the Vice-President and for the bestowal of ONTA awards. The nominations for Vice-President should be submitted by e-mail to Jim Rich [jimmyr@ufl.edu]. The nominations of candidates qualified for ONTA awards should be submitted to Forest Robinson [frobinson@cpru.usda.gov] and should contain a short biography.

Rosa Manzanilla-López, ONTA Secretary, has prepared the following minutes of ONTA Executive Committee:

27th June 2006 (6-7 pm)

Venue: Hotel Tryp Corobici, San Jose (Costa Rica)

The meeting was started at 6 pm. It was attended by Aurelio Ciancio (President), Patrick Quénéhérve (new President), Juan Carlos Magunacelaya (Former President), Renato Crozzoli (Newsletter Spanish Editor), Rosa Manzanilla-López (Secretary), Nancy KokalisBurelle (Editor in Chief), Janete Brito (Business Manager), Jim Rich (Web Page Editor, ONTA Foundation), Rodrigo Rodriguez Kábana, Alejandro Esquivel and Gustavo Fallas (Costa Rica Local Arrangements Committee), Manuel Canto Sáenz and Eleodoro Herrera (Local Arrangements Committee for the XXXIX annual meeting in Lima 2007).

Eulogy. It was agreed to approach a former colleague of Joe Sasser to give some words about his work and contributions to Nematology during the business meeting.

Reports by members of the Executive Committee. The minutes from the previous meeting and the reports were displayed in the meeting room and their main points were analysed by members of the Executive Committee.

Treasurer. It was pointed out by Janete Brito that it was required for the treasurer (Roberto Vargas) to update the headings (dates) on his report.

Editor in Chief. Updating email and post addresses are  important matters, since Nematropica issues are often returned, due to change of address or lost of contact with members. It was mentioned that it is responsibility of members to give notice of address changes.

Secretary. Information regarding the election of the new Vice-President was given. Two hundred and seventy three e-mails were sent twice (May 14th and June 13th) for this election: One hundred and twenty seven for USA and Canada members; 146 e-mails for international members.

ONTA DUES

Rosa Manzanilla-López, ONTA Secretary, reminds ONTA members that at the business meeting in Mexico (2004), ONTA members voted to increase the annual dues to $30 for regular members and $60 for institutions, other organizations and libraries. ONTA dues can be paid by check in US dollars or by VISA.  A $3 processing fee will be charged to payment made by VISA. VISA payments should be sent to the Treasurer, Roberto Vargas (address under ONTA Officers).  A 3% processing fee will be charged to payments made by VISA. United States members can send their check to  the Business Manager, Janete Brito (address under ONTA Officers).

SUSTAINING MEMBERS

Janete Brito, Business Manager, informs that Luis Payan has cooperated with her in obtaining funds for the Organization. ONTA sustaining members are very few and have done their best in supporting ONTA acitivities.  ONTA members express their appreciation to Luis, Janete, and Don Dickson for their efforts in soliciting financial contributions for ONTA activities.

NEMATROPICA

Nancy Kokalis-Burelle, Editor-in-Chief of Nematropica, has completed with great success two years of her mandate in this demanding office. Her scientific skills and managerial expertise have enriched the quality of the Journal that has been published in a timing schedule.

ONTA members express appreciation to Nancy for a job well done and for raising the standard of the scientific quality of the Journal. We hope that Nancy will continue her dedicated service to ONTA also after the expiration of her mandate, in 2008. Nancy has received the assistance of Janete Brito, Business Manager, in handling the financial aspects involving the printing costs of Nematropica, which have increased dramatically in the past two years. It is a policy of the Journal that at least one of the authors submitting papers for publication in Nematropica should be a member of the organization. Printing costs are charged to the authors  requesting a printed version of their papers. ONTA members should be aware that the printing costs of Nematropica utilize almost the entire  annual budget of the Organization because many authors do not pay these costs. Janete Brito is doing an outstanding job in collecting the costs of these unpaid papers. However, many papers remain still unpaid and jeopardize ONTA budget.

Nematropica Mailing Costs

Nematropica issues are mailed by surface outside the United States. Surface mail is not reliable and subject to delays and loss of the parcel.ONTA members outside the United States should consider increasing their annual dues to include airmail cost for Nematropica. The annual airmail costs are: $ 12 for Mexico, $ 9 for Canada and $ 22 for other countries. These costs will be added to the annual dues for members who choose this option.

From page 3.   2006 Executive Committee Meeting

About 10% of emails bounced or the addresses were not longer recognized. The use of e-mail to send dues notices and ballots for the ONTA elections substantially reduced post charges to our Organization.
It was suggested to appoint regional members who can help in keeping ONTA directory updated. However, this point needs to be included in the operations manual. The Secretary will make the appointments.
It was also proposed to delete from the mailing list those members who fail to pay their dues for two consecutive years. These members will be first sent emails and post communications inviting them to renew their membership. Members will delete from mailing lists if they fail to reply and/or to pay their arrears.

Editor in Chief. There were 15 manuscripts submitted to Nematropica. Two issues of Nematropica (Vol. 34, parts 1 & 2) have been prepared and mailed. The journal is now updated and the first issue of 2006 is going to be sent soon. The adoption of electronic submission has reduced to six weeks the period between revision and approval of submitted papers by referees and editor. The participation of Paula Agudelo (Senior Spanish Editor) has contributed to improve the Spanish edition of papers. Guidelines for authors in English and Spanish have been posted in the website. The style of the references has been changed. Publication on line is now an option for those authors who can not pay publication costs. CABI contacted the chief editor to offer to include Nematropica in an indexed repository free of charge. This will increase the access of Nematropica to broader audiences.

Renato Crozzoli commented that research notes had been published in different styles in the two last issues of Nematropica. One included materials and methods.

Business Manager. Janete Brito raised the question about paying for published papers, specifically in cases where co-authors do not take payment responsibility for papers submitted by visiting workers. They do not pay or they do not sent back the reprint form. The amount due in some cases can be up to US$1820. This topic will be considered in the new guidelines for authors. One possibility could be to contact the official host or some person who can endorse the payment.

Nematropicapublishingcost. It was pointed out that publishing and posting of Nematropica is still one of the major expenses for the organization. Publication on-line has been considered. In order to reduce costs, Renata Tenente asked about the possibility to publish the journal in CD or DVD. It was pointed that this would have additional cost and it would require two web nets on line.

Rodrigo Rodriguez Kábana mentioned that Nematropica is gradually moving to become one online publication, with free access and independent of membership or non membership to ONTA. Renata asked what would be then the benefits of being an ONTA member. Rodrigo mentioned that by saving in publishing Nematropica and distribution costs, money could be saved in order to sponsor other projects that we could not attend at present because of lack of money.

Janete Brito (Business Manager) raised the issue about Sustaining Members in relation to the need of creating a position that is needed to link ONTA Foundation and fundraising activities. Luis Payan, Don Dickson, Renato Inserra and Janete are working together on this matter. Janete and Luis (Sustaining member) are also trying to compile a list of potential sponsors.

Discussion was started, and as a conclusion, it was stated that the purpose is not to change present schemes or the people already doing the job, but to get another person on board to help. It would be useful if ONTA members from the different countries could provide names of individuals or organizations that may be willing to sponsor ONTA.  This issue will be defined in the next annual meeting. The Secretary mentioned the need to keep updated the email and post address, with ONTA members support in order to save money and time to the organization. It was mentioned the increase of membership cost during the last two years and that the annual membership target fee of US$30.00 and US$60.00 for libraries, will be met in 2007. Members not paying for two consecutive years will have their membership cancelled. They will be given notice by e-mail and post mail in advance. The need of regional representatives was also mentioned and appointments will be made by the Secretary.

The cost of publishing the conference abstracts has been a major expense for Nematropica. There was a motion about being aware of the importance of this issue for many delegates, and it was proposed to publish on line the conference abstracts, starting next year.

ONTA Foundation. It was pointed out the importance of the Foundation in supporting ONTA expansion plans. It was suggested to revise the purposes of the Foundation and to support expansion activities. Some activities that were put forward for sponsorship include invitations to participate in ONTA annual meetings to outstanding nematologists from Africa or Asia. At present, the ONTA Foundation sponsors the annual Student Poster Competition.

ONTA English Website. Jim Rich pointed out that he has been working in keeping the website for 12 years and he is looking forward to approach people willing to take responsibility of the English website. Cesar Ornat (Spain) was approached last year in Chile by Aurelio Ciancio and he is now in charge of the Spanish web site.

Local Arrangements (Lima 2007). Manuel CantoSáenz and Eleodoro Herrera were at the meeting as part of the Local Arrangements Committee for the XXXIX Annual Meeting. He explained that Maria Scurrah has apologized for not being able to continue to serve on the Local Arrangements Committee since she will be in Australia soon before the meeting. Manuel mentioned about the arrangements they are doing with the hotel Sheraton, International Potato Center and the University of la Molina, Lima, Peru.

ONTA Expansion. A brief report was made by the ad hoc commitee (Nahum Marban and Rosa Manzanilla). During the analysis, it was mentioned the importance of strengthening relationships with other organizations such as those in Brazil and Europe. The need for seed money for this project was also mentioned. One proposal was to work more closely in activities such as workshops or joint meetings. Renata Tenente has been approached in order to organize a future joint meeting with the Brazilian Society of Nematologists. Patrick Quénéhérve offered to help in strengthening links with the South African Society of Nematologists.

The meeting ended at 7 pm.

Meeting in Lima 2007 (Editor’s Note, now canceled). Manuel Canto Sáenz (President of Local Arrangements Committee), and Eleodoro Herrera presented a video showing some of the facilities that would be available for the next ONTA meeting in Lima Peru (2007). It was pointed out the possibility of having a large audience (around 400 delegates) depending on where the meeting will be held (e.g. Sheraton Hotel, La Molina University, International Potato Center).

Manuel Canto Sáenz pointed out that cost could be a constraint to have the talks in the conference facilities of the hotel. It was suggested to him to consider that some hotels may include the conference facilities as part of the package to host the conference. To ensure attendance there is the possibility of finding cheaper accommodation (and food) nearby the Sheraton hotel. One of the concerns was the involved time in moving from the hotel to the La Molina University facilities. Manuel mentioned that the journey is not more than 30 min by bus and that there will be university buses to help. There is also public transport and taxis, and it would be relatively cheap considering the exchange rate of the local currency against dollar or euros. Manuel said that he would try to do the arrangements to keep the conference in one place (e.g. hotel facilitities).

Nahúm Marbán Mendoza expressed the concern of the people of repeating experiences such as the Zamorano (Honduras),  Trinidad and Tobago where conferences were held within university facilities with not very good memories. He asked Manuel to consider these concerns but he also wished Manuel and the local arrangements committee success in the organization of the meeting. Don Dickson also reminded the audience of the excellent meeting that Manuel organized in Peru some years ago. A nematology pre-conference course and an advanced course post-conference on Meloidogyne will be given.

This proposal was supported by Brian Kerry, who pointed out the importance of student attendance and participation in the planned activities for the meeting.

Another point on the agenda included news that abstracts will be published online from next year onwards.

The results of the election were given and Marcelo Doucet was elected new ONTA Vice-President.

The meeting ended at 7 pm.

Renata Tenente is one of the most active ONTA members from Brazil. She has prepared the following report concerning a database containing a list of the plant parasitic nematodes reported in Brazil.

The rapid expansion of international trade has created an urgent need by phytosanitary organizations for information about the distribution of agricultural and medicinal pests and diseases.

Many countries, especially those that signed the World Trade Organization (WTO) Protocols, are implementing improved procedures to enforce phytosanitary measures to help avoid the movement of economically important nematodes across national borders.  As a member of MERCOSUL (Common Market of Southern Trade) and a signatory to the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC), Brazil has rights

and obligations concerning international trade that derive from the WTO Agreement on the Application of Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures. Other WTO Agreements such as the Technical Barriers to the Trade Agreement may also be relevant in certain circumstances. The IPPC is recognized by the WTO under the Application of Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures.

Brazil is represented by the National Phytosanitary Protection Committee (NPPC) of the Agricultural Defense Secretary (ADS) of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Supply (MAPA).  The primary objectives of NPPC and ADS are 1) pest detection, 2) exclusion of exotic plants and pests, 3) establishment of integrated pest management programs, and 4) improvement of international commodities trade.  Achieving these objectives requires an effective system for accessing all relevant Brazilian publications that pertain to plants and nematodes in the country.  Access to this information will permit these agencies to maintain up-to-date surveys of the occurrence of plants and nematodes in Brazil and to establish or revise phytosanitary measures for imported material, based on international standards or current research.

Toward these ends, The Nematology Laboratory of the Embrapa Genetic Resources and Biotechnology Center and Catholic University of Brasilia have constructed a comprehensive database of Brazilian bibliographical references to species of nematodes and plants in Brazil.  The database is searchable and can be found at http://www.cenargen.embrapa.br/segbio/segbio.html or on the Embrapa webpage www.cenargen.embrapa.br.  Descriptions of the known geographic distributions of plant and nematode species in Brazil are also available at the site.  The database currently contains nearly 2000 bibliographical references covering the period from 1981 to 2006.

This new tool will prove useful not only to customs offices and quarantine institutions in Brazil, but to their counterparts throughout the world and to others involved in plant and nematode research.  The database will be updated continuously to remain relevant to those who require up-to-date knowledge about the ever changing worldwide distributions of plants and nematodes.

2006 ONTA OFFICER AND COMMITTEE REPORTS

BUSINESS MANAGER REPORT

OCTOBER 2005-JUNE 2006
Update of May 2005-October 2005 Report:

NEMATROPICA Vol. 34, No. 2: The printing charges for this issue amounted to $ 6,797.47. Eight bills have been paid on this issue totaling $ 2,680. Four bills totaling $ 1,280 remain outstanding. If we collect on all bills, our payment recovery will be $ 3,960.00. This figure differs from that in the previous report ($ 3,902.00) due to invoice modifications. Thus, this issue will cost ONTA $ 2,837.47. This unbalance reflects the printing costs of the abstracts from XXXVI Annual meeting in Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico, PDF files delivered to UFLCA, and postage (issues and reprints).

Total printing charges for NEMATROPICA Vol. 35, No. 1 amounted to $ 3,359.37. Bills were mailed to all authors. To date, we have collected on 5 bills totaling $ 1,602.00. Two bills remain outstanding totaling $ 648.00. If we collect on all bills, our payment recovery will be 2,250.00. Thus, this issue will cost ONTA $1,109.37. This unbalance reflects the expenses with PDF files delivered to UFLCA, labels, and postage (issues and reprints).
Four authors requested reprints, thus the average cost for mailing each reprint was
$16.06.

Total printing charges for NEMATROPICA Vol. 35, No. 2 amounted to $ 5,337.35. This issue contained abstracts from the XXXVII Annual meeting in Vina del Mar, Chile, October 17-21, 2005, totaling 44 printed pages, the cost of which was absorbed by ONTA. Bills were mailed to all authors. To date, we have collected on 2 bills totaling $ 1,038.00. Five bills remain outstanding totaling $ 1,635.00. If we collect on all bills, our payment recovery will be $ 2,673.00. If we collect all the bills this issue will cost ONTA $ 2,664.35. This unbalance reflects the expenses with meeting abstracts presented at the XXXVII meeting, Chile, PDF files delivered to UFLCA, labels, and postage (issues and reprints).
Four authors requested reprints, thus the average cost for mailing each reprint was
$20.85.

In conclusion, ONTA expenses for publishing NEMATROPICA 34(2), 35(1) and 35(2) are $ 6,611.19. These expenses are caused mainly by the printing costs of the abstracts of papers presented at two meetings and by unpaid costs of papers by some authors.

A total of 38 ONTA annual dues for 2006 were paid through the business manager totaling $950.00.

Dr. Janete A. Brito Business Manager

Report by the Editor-in-chief of Nematropica for 2006

Since assuming duties as Editor-in-Chief of Nematropica in May 2005, a total of 31 manuscripts have been submitted with three manuscripts rejected. Volume 35 is complete and volume 36 (1) is in press and contains eight Research Reports and two Research Notes (one Research Note will be published on-line-only).

My primary goal as EIC of Nematropica is to publish the journal on schedule, reducing the time necessary to review manuscripts, while maintaining the scientific quality of the journal.  We have made significant progress towards this goal.  The June 2006 issue was sent to the printer May 15, 2006.  In order to reduce the time required for the submission and review process, I have implemented electronic submission and review of manuscripts.  Authors can submit manuscripts either electronically by e-mail, or by regular mail.  All manuscripts are sent to reviewers electronically.  Reviewers have the option of submitting their reviews either electronically or by mail.  The electronic submission and review process has significantly reduced the time between submission and publication of accepted manuscripts.

In addition to processing manuscripts, I have revised the Guide to Authors with the help of my Senior Editors Paula Agudelo and Kathy Lawrence.  Others contributing to the revision include Renato Inserra, Richard Davis, Janete Brito, Soledad Verdejo-Lucas, Jimmy Rich, Larry Duncan, Bob McSorley, Rodrigo Rodríguez-Kábana, Patrick Queneherve, and Aurelio Ciancio.  The revised Guide to Authors will be published in both English and Spanish in Volume 36 (1),

ONTA NEWSLETTER Org. 10

and is currently available on both the English and Spanish websites. I would like to acknowledge Jimmy Rich and César Ornat Longaron for their efforts to post the revised Guide on these websites.

I have been working with Dr. Louisa Rogers, Content Editor of CABI Publishing to include Nematropica in a new full text repository being developed by CAB International.  This will be a repository of full text material where documents can be located by searching the CAB Abstracts database, and should considerably enhance the exposure of the journal beyond the nematology community world wide among users of CAB Abstracts. Availability through CABI will be in addition to the current web site maintained by the Florida Center for Library Automation (FCLA).

It has been my pleasure to serve as Editor of Nematropica during the past year.  I would like to acknowledge all of the Senior and Associate Editors, Business Manager, and most importantly, the scientists who have served as reviewers. I would like to especially acknowledge Paula Agudelo for her expertise in Spanish translation. I have worked very closely with Paula over the past year in which she has been responsible for the translation of the Guide to Authors, abstracts, and the entire review process for manuscripts submitted in Spanish.  Paula has worked very hard to improve the quality and consistency of the journal for our Spanish readers.

The only ONTA Foundation expenditure was the cost of renewing status as a nonprofit corporation in Florida U.S.A.  All Foundation funds are deposited in interest-bearing accounts and with continued financial support from ONTA members and interest earnings, we hope additional funding will be available in the future to support ONTA activities and Nematology in general. Foundation Committee members were Charles Overstreet (Chairman), Joe Eger, Jenny Escobar, Jim Rich, Mario Araya, and Marta Susana del Toro.

ONTA NOMINATIONS COMMITTEE REPORT: 2005-2006

The ONTA Nominations Committee was composed of Jim Rich (Chairperson), Nicola Greco, Nahum Marban-Mendoza, Patrick Queneherve, Renata C. V. Tenente and Renato Inserra.  The Committee, appointed by ONTA President Aurelio Ciancio, was asked to develop a list of candidates for ONTA Vice-President (President-Elect).  A call for nominations was prepared by Jim Rich and placed in the November 2005 ONTA Newsletter by Renato Inserra.  In addition, an email announcement and request was sent to all ONTA members in February, 2006.

ONTA NEWSLETTER Org. 12

The Nominations Committee received seven responses from ONTA members who nominated five individuals for Vice-President. These nominees were approved and ranked by the Nominations Committee, and candidate names and rankings were forwarded to the ONTA Executive Committee for changes or approval.  Two Vice-Presidential candidates, Drs. Manuel Canto-Sanez and Marcelo Doucet were selected, and each candidate graciously agreed to serve if elected. Ballots containing brief biographical sketches (in Spanish and English) were emailed to all ONTA members in early May, 2006, and a reminder notice was sent to ONTA members in late May.  Ballots returned by members to the Secretary were counted and the new Vice-President (2006-2007) will be announced at the ONTA Annual Meeting in San Jose, Costa Rica.

We would like to thank the candidates for agreeing to serve ONTA, and also, give a special thanks to ONTA Secretary Rosa Manzanilla-Lopez for her assistance with the balloting.

ONTA Secretary’s ANNUAL Report
(October 16, 2005-June 21st, 2006)

Dear ONTA members,

The list of members and subscribers’ agencies was updated as much as possible. These lists were used to send Nematropica Vol. 35, numbers 1 & 2. I especially thank Dr Renato Inserra, Dr Nancy Kokalis-Burelle, Dr Janete Brito and Nematropica Printer for their help in preparing Nematropica labels.

Dues were received during the XXXVII ONTA Conference in Viña del Mar. Dues notices and a letter inviting support for the ONTA Foundation for 2006 were e-mailed or posted in February. Dues and payments made to ONTA were regularly sent to the Treasurer (Dr Roberto Vargas Ayala). Information on how to make VISA card payments has been provided to members with the invoice forms.

The annual cost of individual membership increased from 20.00USD to 25.00USD for 2006. Subscription to Libraries increased from 40.00USD to 50.00USD. A list of checks and payments has been prepared for reference.

One hundred and thirty nine active members renewed their membership. We received 18 new members.

The use of e-mail to send dues notices and ballots for the ONTA elections substantially reduced postal charges to our Organization. We strongly encourage our members to inform the Secretary and the Web Page Manager of changes in their e-mail addresses so that we can maintain efficient contact.

Queries and correspondence were answered.

The election of the new Vice-President was called on May 14th and closed on Tuesday 20 of June.

I would like to thank Peggy King (former ONTA Secretary) for continuing to forward to me ONTA correspondence.

The help of our Business Manager (Dr Janete Brito) has been very valuable in updating our directory of active members and in dealing with queries regarding Nematropica missing issues.

ONTA Web Page Committee Report
2005-2006

ONTA has two worldwide web sites, one in English (www.ontaweb.org) and one in Spanish (http://mie.esab.upc.es/onta/) and these sites are linked to each other for easy access.  The first and only Web Master for the Spanish language site, Aurelio Ciancio, stepped down during 20005  and responsibility for the site was transferred to Caesar Ornat-Longaron.  The two web sites were revised over the course of the year and changes included updating current ONTA membership and officer information, linking the 2006 Costa Rica Annual Meeting announcement site, providing new links to Nematological sites, and publishing two volumes of the ONTA NEWSLETTER online. Additionally, previous Newsletters were archived as well as the 2004-2005 Committee Reports. Photos from the 2005 Chile Annual Meeting were placed on the web – thanks J. Escobar. In addition, the new Web Editor redesigned the opening page for the Spanish Language Site during the year. The Web Page Committee

ONTA NEWSLETTER Org. 14

recognizes and gives our thanks for the outstanding efforts of Aurelio Ciancio for initiating the ONTA Spanish Language Web Site and for his many years of service and dedication to the site.  In addition, Melissa Thorpe is given long overdue thanks for assisting in design, development and maintenance of the ONTA English Web Site. Lastly, we ask all ONTA members to make comments to improve the Opening pages and the Web Sites as a whole. All suggestions for improvements and additions are really appreciated. ONTA Web Site Committee members for 2005-2006 were Cesar Ornat-Longaron (Co-Chair), Jimmy Rich (Co-Chair), Khuong B. Nguyen, Javier Franco, and Erwin Aballay.

ONTA Spanish Web Site Committee Report

Some changes have been made this year, mainly in the design of the page, although further work is yet to be done.  A new area in the home page has been inserted for news, including changes to the website.  Statistics of visits have been inserted (free service), by countries, although it was necessary to reduce 50% of the accessions from Spain, since they correspond to the trials that I made.  The directory of members has been modified so that is easier to locate members by looking for name and/or last names or country. It is important to maintain this information in some searchable format (e.g. Excel) so that information can be updated quickly and easily.  Publication of the Newsletter in Spanish in March 2006, format WEB and pdf, was translated by Renato Crozzoli. The Spanish version of the Nematropica Guide for Authors was updated in April.
