XXXVI ONTA REUNION

PUERTO VALLARTA, MEXICO, OCTOBER 4-8, 2004

The 36th Annual ONTA Reunion was a very successful meeting for the quality of the scientific program and broad international participation. Detailed information about the events of the meeting and the reports of ONTA officers for 2003-2004 is posted on ONTA website.
During this meeting, there was no formal Executive Committee Meeting because ONTA’s president Renato Crozzoli was not able to come from Venezuela. However, an informal session was held on October 3rd, 2004, from 5:15 to 6:15 PM.  Members of the Executive Committee and ONTA officers discussed important ONTA matters such as, the electronic version of Nematropica, the qualifications of potential candidates for the new Editor-in-chief of the Journal, and the need to increase ONTA annual dues. The participants were Aurelio Ciancio, Renato Inserra, Juan Carlos Magunacelaya and Rodrigo Rodriguez-Kabana.
The ONTA Business meeting was held on October 7th and was well attended by ONTA members.

Minutes of the ONTA Business Meeting  (Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, 7th  October, 2004)

The meeting started at 18:10. Juan Carlos Magunacelaya presided over the business session in the absence of former ONTA president Renato Crozzoli, who, due to circumstances beyond his control in Venezuela, could not attend the annual meeting.
A one minute silence was observed in memory of  Franco Lamberti (Italy), Lourdes Sánchez (Cuba) and Shiou Pin Huang (Brazil). Aurelio Ciancio read  Lamberti’s obituary, Mayra Rodríguez gave a speech in memory of  Lourdes Sánchez, andRenata Tenente commemorated  Shiou Pin.
The minutes from the Guayaquil, Ecuador, meeting (2003) were approved. These minutes included reports from the Business Manager, Editor-in Chief of Nematropica, ONTA Foundation, Home Page Editor, Newsletter Editors, Secretary, Treasurer and Web Page Committee.
On behalf of Peggy King, former ONTA Secretary, Rodrigo Rodríguez Kabana gave her annual report. He also transmitted her good wishes to ONTA. In her last report, Peggy noted that the list of ONTA members has neither increased nor decreased, but it is evident that the list of members needs to be increased to benefit the society.
Rodrigo Rodríguez-Kábana proceeded to give election results for Vice-President and Secretary. Aurelio Ciancio (Italy) was elected Vice-President for the next period (2004-2005) and Rosa H. Manzanilla-López, Secretary (2004-2007). Both assumed their new posts.
Information related to the XXXVII ONTA annual meeting to be held in Viña del Mar (Chile) in 2005 was given by the local organizers. They referred to the fact that the last ONTA meeting held in Chile was in 1987. Erwin Aballay (Chairman of Local Arrangements Committee for 2005) expressed the pleasure that this event represents for the Chilean nematologists. He also pointed out that this was the first time that their six nematologists had attended an ONTA meeting (Ingrid Moreno, Elena Dagnino,Victor Navia, Andrés France, Godoy, Carlos Magunacelaya). They attended this meeting in Mexico to show the interest and commitment that the Chileans have in organizing the next meeting in Chile in 2005. The third week of October was set as a tentative date to hold the conference. It was demonstrated that Viña del Mar has the required infrastructure, a broad range of hotels to host the conference, and that the cool temperate climate will provide ONTA members with an opportunity to look at non-tropical crops. Among other activities of the program, a wine tasting competition was mentioned.
Invitations for upcoming meetings. The next issue was the consultation to hold future ONTA meetings considering the International Congress of Nematology. The year 2008 is a tentative date for the next conference to take place, but it is possible that the conference may move to 2007 or even 2006, as a result of proposals to shorten the six-year time between the international conferences. However, there has not yet been agreement on the date because other meetings will be held at the same time, but 2006 looked as if it would not be a realistic date. It is still not known which country will host the conference.
Considering the above information, proposals from countries to host the next ONTA meetings were as follows (2006): Cuba (Emilio Fernández and  Mayra Rodríguez), Brazil (Renata Tenente) and Costa Rica (Alejandro Esquivel and Gustavo Fallas). Considering that the sixth international Phytosanitation seminar will be held in Cuba in 2006, Renata Tenente (Brazil) withdrew her proposal. Costa Rica offered to be the host for 2006; and after 2006, Brazil could offer to host the meeting.
Regarding Costa Rica’s proposal to host the 2006 ONTA meeting, Alejandro Esquivel and Gustavo Fallas reiterated their proposal, mentioning the possibility of involving the National University, research institutions and companies to organize the conference there. They offered to obtain official letters of local support to propose Costa Rica as host to the ONTA meeting in 2006. According to present procedures, an official letter must be submitted in advance to the ONTA President by the local organizers from the host country wishing to hold the meeting.
Renata Tenente said that she could prepare the official letter to hold the ONTA annual meeting in 2008 in Brazil and would deliver the letter during the next meeting in Chile in 2005.
The dates (2007 or 2008) for the next international congress of nematology were brought again into discussion. Mayra Rodríguez proposed that if the international congress was not held in 2007, then Cuba could host the ONTA annual meeting. Cuba and Brazil could also be possible candidates for 2007-2008, depending on which year the international congress will take place. Reyes Peña-Santiago (Spain) asked about the reasons behind the change of dates for the international congress. Apparently, this change is due to the nematology federation wanting to have the international meeting every five years instead of every six.
Membership Fees. The next issue discussed was the membership fees. Justifications to increase the membership fee included the fact that it has remained the same over many years, the high inflation index, reputation of the society, and the recommendation to by the Business Manager (Charles Weaver) for an increase, although he did not specify the amount.
It was agreed that the fee is too low. Among the proposals, Nahúm Marbán suggested that dues be increased to US $ 25.00 or $ 30.00.
Mario Araya (Costa Rica) proposed that the fee should be increased progressively by US $ 5.00 every year, i.e. up to US $ 20.00 in 2005, US $ 25.00 in 2006 and afterwards to increase it every year according to the inflation rate.
Reyes-Peña Santiago suggested that adequate measures should be taken to arrange membership fee payments by credit card. He also proposed to double the present fee (i.e. from US $ 15.00 to 30.00).
Andrés France (Chile), proposed that the membership fee payment should be done during the annual meeting at the moment when members were going to pay their registration fee to the ONTA annual conference; it could therefore be included in the registration fee.
As parliamentary, Rodrigo Rodríguez-Kábana proposed the shortlist to increase the present fee by five US dollars for the next year and progressively thereafter; also he proposed, as a second point of discussion, the form of payment. Nahúm Marbán‘sproposal was voted and two people supported it.
Janet Rowe proposed two fees, but this proposal was considered as part of another motion. It was also noted that increasing the membership fee will mainly affect students.
No other business being proposed for discussion, a vote was taken on Mario Arayas’s proposal with 16 votes in favor and 8 votes against. Apparently the fee issue was not enough clear for everybody as Erwin Aballay (Chile) asked what had been voted for, although he pointed out that he was supportive of increasing the membership fee. It was mentioned that once the vote had been made there was no possibility of making any further change.
Nahúm Marbán moved that fee increments should be voted again as it was not clear for everybody beforehand what were the options. He asked Mario Araya to withdraw his proposal and to vote again for one of the two options (i.e. to increase immediately the fee membership up to US $ 30.00 or to increase it progressively until the US $ 25.00 top was reached).
It was not accepted to withdraw the proposal already voted (i.e. membership fee progressive increment), and it was not possible to reach an agreement over this issue, therefore this issue was left pending until it can be resolved next year in Chile.
Payment. The next point to discuss was the payment by credit card.  Nahúm Marbán (México) argued that this method of payment was very costly for the society. Also, it was also mentioned that what had worked best traditionally was to make the payment for membership renewal at every annual meeting.
Jenny Escobar (Ecuador) suggested to reactivate the services of the ONTA representatives in each country. The representatives would be responsible for collecting the fees from the members in each country and to take them to the next annual meeting to be paid there. It was proposed that a delegate per country be appointed to collect the fees. The meeting was adjourned at 19:30.

UPCOMING 37th ONTA ANNUAL MEETING
VIÑA DEL MAR, CHILE, OCTOBER 17-21, 2005

As announced at the ONTA Business Meeting, ONTA members have accepted the invitation by Erwin Aballay to hold the upcoming meeting in Viña del Mar, Chile, during the Chilean spring time. The Local Arrangement Committee (LAC) Members areErwin Aballay (Chair), Manuel Araya Arraño, Andrés France, Elena Dagnino, Maria Teresa Ilesca, Juan Carlos Magunacelaya, Victor Navia, Gloria Peña,  Ruben Santamaria and Hugo Pacheco. ONTA Vice-President Aurelio Ciancio, who is responsible for the scientific program of the meeting is in close contact with LAC members. Aurelio is going to visit LAC members in April to coordinate the details of the scientific program. 2006 ONTA ANNUAL MEETING
SAN JOSÉ, COSTA RICA, JUNE 26-30, 2006

ONTA President Juan Carlos Magunacelaya informed that he has received an official invitation from Alejandro Esquivel to hold the 38th ONTA Annual Reunion inCosta Rica.  Alejandro would like to organize the meeting in San José, Cost Rica, on June 26-30, 2006. ONTA President accepted the invitation that wasinformally presented to ONTA members by Alejandro and Gustavo Fallas during the ONTA Business Meeting in Mexico. ONTA members thank Alejandro and Gustavo for their invitation and look forward to meeting in Costa Rica in the summer 2006.

NEW ONTA OFFICERS

At the ONTA Business meeting, the election of Aurelio Ciancio to the office of ONTA Vice-President, and Rosa H. Manzanilla-López  to the office of ONTA Secretary was announced.  ONTA members express congratulations to Aurelio and Rosa and wish them a successful term. Rosa is replacing Peggy King, who served as Secretary for more than 20 years. Peggy has kept the organization together and has diligently maintained contacts with ONTA members located in countries lacking adequate communication systems. Peggy deserves the gratitude of ONTA members for her dedicated services.

NEW EDITOR-IN-CHIEF OF NEMATROPICA

Ed McGawley has completed his term as Editor-in-Chief of Nematropica. Ed has dedicated much time and energy to the preparation and publication of the Journal. ONTA members express their appreciation to Ed for his efforts in maintaining the scientific quality of Nematropica.
Two candidates accepted to replace Ed in his difficult and demanding job. They were: Katheryn Kay Scott Lawrence and Nancy Kokalis-Burelle. Katheryn Scott Lawrence is Professor of Plant Pathology, Auburn University, at Auburn, Alabama. Nancy Kokalis-Burelle is a Research Ecologist, U. S. Department of Agriculture, Agriculture Research Services, U. S. Department of Agriculture, Agriculture Research Services, Horticultural Research Laboratory, Ft. Pierce, Florida. ONTA Executive Committee decided that the EC members and past editors-in-chief of Nematropica were supposed to select one of the two candidates in an open election. In this election, Nancy Kokalis-Burelle obtained the majority of the votes and was elected new Editor-in-Chief of Nematropica. ONTA members thank Nancy for accepting the position and wish her success in this endeavor. Nancy will reorganize the editorial board of Nematropica. She has established a position of Senior Editor for the English version of the Journal. She offered this position to Katheryn Scott Lawrence who accepted this office. Nancy is in the process of searching candidates to replace Charles Weaver as Business Manger of the Journal.  Charles has served on this office since 1986. He has taken care of the financial status of Nematropica and has been in close contact with ONTA Treasurer Roberto Vargas. ONTA members hope that Charles will train and coach the new Business Manger in financial matters involving Nematropica.

ONTA DUES

The ONTA editor would like to note that as a consequence of the decision taken at the Business Meeting in Mexico, ONTA dues are to be increased by $5 annually. The new ONTA dues are now US $ 20 rather than US $ 15.  ONTA treasurer, Roberto Vargas-Ayala, also informs that ONTA dues can be paid now with the credit cards VISA and Master Card. This new service is available to the members at a cost of 3% of the amount of the transaction. Any payment made to ONTA by credit card will be automatically increased by 3 percent.
