The 36th Annual ONTA Reunion will be held at the Hotel Krystal in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, 4-8 October 2004. The meeting is being organized by Nahúm Marbán Mendoza chair of the Local Arrangements Committee (LAC) with the assistance of LAC members Rosita H. Manzanilla-López and Antonio Segura Miranda, coordinators of the scientific program, and Francisco Ponze Gonzaléz and Juán Fernando Solís, coordinators of financial contributions for the meeting. Detailed information is posted on the ONTA website (www.ontaweb.org).
Deadlines for registration and submission of abstracts are August 15, 2004. The deadline for Hotel Registration is September 3, 2004. The following information about the scientific program at the meeting is provided by Rosita H. Manzanilla-López .
Seven symposia that cover different aspects of Nematology are being tentatively organized by our colleagues:
Each symposium (2 hours approximately) will include presentations by different specialists on the subject. They will address topics of special relevance to our discipline, as listed below. These days, we are involved in a “revolution” based on cellular and molecular approaches to understanding plant-nematode interactions, and during our meeting we will have the opportunity to appreciate how quickly Nematology is moving from cellular research approaches towards the new areas of molecular biology and genomics.
Our organization has the mission of developing, communicating and nurturing Nematology for future generations. Therefore, we will have symposia dedicated to the discussion of aspects of all of the below listed topics, including the opportunities that will arise for Nematology in generations to come. These topics encompass the major aspects of Nematological research. Topics that are becoming important in Nematology are also included:

Our XXXVI Annual Reunion also includes workshops (mesas de trabajo) for various crops, oral and poster sessions.
A part of this year’s scientific program, we will include a three-day pre-conference workshop on ‘Plant-pathogenic nematodes of quarantine importance.’ hosted by the Autonomous University of Chapingo, Mexico. The workshop will take place in Chapingo, from September 29th to October 1st, 2004. It will include the participation of colleagues from Europe and the Americas. Details of the program, costs and booking arrangements will soon be available on the ONTA website.
The objectives of the workshop are discussed by Rosita H. Manzanilla-López in the following section of the Newsletter.
AIMS OF THE PRECONFERENCE WORKSHOP
In the Americas, and within the wider commercial framework of international agreements (GATT, NAFTA, EU, etc.), phytosanitation is a major issue in the prevention of pest introduction to provide for safer international trade. Quarantine regulations for pests and diseases include plant-pathogenic nematode species, which represent an important threat for both export and import. However, the habitat and biology of plant-pathogenic nematodes pose various challenges for their timely detection and identification due to their microscopic size and extraction methods. The expertise to expedite these detection efforts are not always available and thus complicate the efforts to prevent their dissemination through contaminated products.
Some of the most important topics to be presented at the workshop are related to identification, diagnostics, sampling, epidemiology and the establishment of phytosanitary measures. These topics will be addressed by quarantine specialists and discussed with the participants and include: morphological and molecular identification of quarantine nematodes, pest exclusion programs, pest risk analyses, and nematode quarantine programs enacted by selected regional organizations. An international group of speakers from Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, European Union, Mexico and the U.S.A. will discuss these topics.
Phytosanitary issues presented and debated at the workshop are directed to senior and junior phytosanitation staff from public and private diagnostic laboratories who are involved with the identification of plant pathogenic nematodes of quarantine importance.
The involvement of both the University of Chapingo and ONTA in hosting the workshop will allow graduate and undergraduate students of agriculture and Nematology to attend and participate in the talks.
Workshop presentations will be compiled in a book format for distribution. More information and guidelines will be provided once the final program and list of presenters is prepared.
ONTA members wish to express their gratitude to Nahúm Marbán Mendoza, Rosita H. Manzanilla-López and the LAC members for their time and energies spent in planning and organizing these two combined events which enrich the scientific value and activity of our organization. We are sure that this ONTA Annual Meeting will be attended by many participants who will contribute to its success with the quality of their scientific presentations.
STUDENT POSTER COMPETITION $$$$
ALL STUDENTS!! The annual ONTA Best Student Poster Competition will be held at the XXXV ONTA Meeting in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. The deadline for submitting abstracts is August 15th, and please indicate that you will be entering the Competition. The First Place Award includes a plaque and $500 U.S., and Second Place also includes a plaque and a cash award of $300 U.S. The Poster Competition is sponsored by the ONTA Foundation through generous gifts made by Dr. R. Rodriguez-Kabana.
CALL FOR NOMINATIONS
As announced in the previous issue of the Newsletter (34 No.2), our longtime ONTA Secretary, Peggy King will retire this year, necessitating the election of a replacement. ONTA members should submit nominations immediately for the office of ONTASecretary. It is also time to submit nominations for the office of Vice-President. ONTA members are requested to submit their nominations to Patrick Quénéhervé chair of the Nominations Committee (e-mail: queneherve@ird-mq.fr).
ONTA members are reminded that two other positions are due for replacement in 2004. These positions are those of ONTA Business Manager, Charles Weaver, and Nematropica Editor-in-Chief, Edward C. McGawley. According to the ONTA Constitution, these persons are appointed by the President and approved by the ONTA Executive Committee.
ONTA AWARD NOMINATIONS
The following awards have been established by ONTA: Honorary Member, Distinguished Service Award, Bayer CropScience Award (formerly Rhone-Poulenc Award) and Special Award. The qualifications for these awards are specified in the ONTA Operations Manual which is accessible on www.ontaweb.org ONTA members are reminded to propose the candidates for these awards to Gregory R. Noel, Chair of the Honors and Awards Committee <g-noel1@uiuc.edu>, by August 31, 2004. Greg’s complete address is listed under Honors and Awards Committee at the bottom of this Newsletter.
PASSING
Lourdes Sánchez-Portales
Emilio Fernández has informed us about the untimely death of Lourdes Sánchez-Portales who was a scientist at the National Center of Plant Health (Centro Nal. Sanidad Agropecuaria), San José de las Lajas, Havana, CUBA. Lourdes Sánchez-Portales was an active member of our organization. She co-chaired with Emilio Fernández the local arrangement committee of the 33rd ONTA meeting, held in Varadero, Cuba, in June 2001. Lourdes was an excellent scientist and a pleasant and energetic person. She dedicated her life to the promotion of the science of Nematology in Cuba. Her pleasant personality and scientific contribution to our organization will be missed by ONTA members who extend their condolences to her family.
Franco Lamberti
Nicola Greco has informed us about the untimely death of Franco Lamberti. Franco had recovered from a by-pass surgery in 1988. He died abruptly at his home on August 16, 2004. Franco was a highly regarded nematologist with worldwide experience about nematode taxonomy and nematode-related problems causing crop damage. Dagger and needle nematodes were his passion. He collected these nematodes in many countries and prepared excellent keys for their identification. Franco promoted research and studies on plant nematology in Italy. He established the first Italian Plant Nematology Institute, supported by the Italian National Council of Research (CNR), Bari, Italy. Many Italian nematologists were trained by Franco. His managerial skills were unmatched and enabled him to organize meetings, workshops and congresses concerning various aspects of plant nematology. Additionally he was instrumental in the publication of the journal, Nematologia Mediterranea. He was a fellow of the Society of Nematologists (SON) and was awarded with the Distinguished Service Award and Special Award of the Organization of the Nematologists of Tropical America (ONTA). His expertise and friendship will be missed by us and the nematological community. Franco is survived by his wife Teresa, daughter Carlotta, son Lamberto, and grandchildren, who receive our condolences.
ACHIEVEMENT
Jim Rich informed us that a Nematology research project conducted by Matthew Jesse Richardson won First Place in the Botany Division at the INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) held in May, 2004 in Portland, Oregon. Matthew, 16 years of age and a high school junior from DeFuniak Springs, Florida won the Botany competition with his work entitled ‘Effectiveness of Biofumigants vs. Natural Antagonists for Meloidogyne incognita Management in Lycopersicon esculentum,”.Matthew was mentored by Jim Rich, University of Florida Professor of Nematology. More than 1,400 students from 40 countries participated in the International Science Fair, making it the largest showcase of young scientific talent in the world.
Richardson has lived on a farm all his life. “My interest in botany and nematodes is in part due to my father’s occupation,” he said. “It is through these experiences that I have grown to appreciate agriculture as an industry and botany as a science.” Richardson said he plans to continue his work in the future at the University of Florida. “Winning a First Place at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair provided a $3,000 scholarship and instilled in me the desire to continue my research,” he said.Jim Rich has been Matthews’s mentor for the past four years.

PROPOSED CHANGES IN THE ONTA EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
In the previous issue of the Newsletter (34 No.2), ONTA members were asked to provide the ONTA President Renato Crozzoli with suggestions and comments about proposed changes in the composition of ONTA Executive Committee (EC). The EC is the governing body of our organization so any changes are extremely important to the future of ONTA. To see the present composition of the Executive Committee refer to the listing at the end of this Newsletter. Also, the official responsibilities of the EC are in the ONTA Constitution posted on the ONTA website (www.ontawb.org).
The details concerning the proposed changes are listed below.
A preliminary exchange of views on ONTA Executive Committee Member (EC) composition has been initiated due to: 1) the need to add other members (e.g. ONTA WEB Editor), 2) questions as to whether some appointed positions should continue to be included (e.g. Nematropica Business Manager), and 3) inconsistencies in official listings compared to the intent of the ONTA Constitution. These have led to some confusion as to the composition of the Executive Committee, particularly when voting on issues of importance to ONTA. Jim Rich has proposed that EC membership and voting rights should be clearly defined via constitutional intent and then open discussions made for any other changes that may be needed. He previously opened a dialogue with Forest Robinson (Immediate Past President), Julia Meredith (Honorary Member), Renato Crozzoli (Current President) and Renato Inserra (Newsletter Editor). Their suggestions for further discussion by all ONTA members included the following:
1) That the Executive Committee (EC) should consist only of the President, Vice President, Past President, Secretary, Treasurer, Nematropica Editors (English and Spanish), Newsletter Editor-in-Chief and two Members-at-Large appointed by the President.
2) That the ONTA Web Editor should also be included as a member of the EC as approved at the ONTA Business meeting in Guayaquil, Ecuador (July, 2003). They suggest that the Nematropica Business Manager should not be a member of the EC (note: both adding the ONTA Web Editor to the EC and deleting the Business Manager requires a constitutional amendment).
3) That only members of the EC or their duly appointed representatives (one per member) should be allowed to vote on EC matters and each member should have only one vote. However, that EC members be allowed to designate a representative with voting authority if she/he cannot attend an annual meeting.
4) That the President or any EC member should have the authority to invite anyone she/he wants to an EC meeting for purposes of information and debate.
5) That all ONTA members are and should be welcomed at EC meetings and shall have a right to speak. However, these participants may voice their opinion but do not vote. We need ONTA member suggestions and ideas on these very important issues.
