XXXVII ONTA REUNION

VIÑA DEL MAR, CHILE, OCTOBER 17-21, 2005

The time for the 37 th Annual ONTA Reunion is approaching quickly. ONTA members are invited to attend this important scientific event. The quality of the scientific program should attract a broad international participation. The planned symposia on nematode pests of solanaceous crops and fruit trees will be of great interest for nematologists from the Americas and other geographical areas of the world. The deadline for registration and submitting abstracts for the meeting expired in August. Late registrations will be accepted. Please contact the organizers of the meeting and Erwin Aballay erwinaba@uchile.cl ) for more details concerning the meeting. ONTA home page has devoted a section of the site to this special event.   Detailed information about the plans for the meeting is posted on the ONTA website (look under ‘Annual Meeting’ links).

Members attending the meeting should contact the Chilean Embassy and Consulate for obtaining a visa. U. S. citizens can obtain a tourist card during their flight to Chile on American carriers. However, they must pay US$ 100 entrance tax in cash when they arrive in Chile.

PASSING

JOSEPH N. SASSER

(1921-2005)

Ken Barker has informed us that Joe Sasser passed away on August 17, 2005. The editor of the News letter would like to convey to ONTA members the same sad words that Ken Barker wrote in his message. He said: ‘It is with a deep sense of loss and sadness that this note carries the news of Dr. Joseph N. Sasser ‘s death today. Yet, for those who have enjoyed Joe ‘s total commitment, enthusiasm and unmatched contributions to his profession, we must be unendingly grateful for this giant of a nematologist and friend”.

Many ONTA members had the opportunity and pleasure to meet Joe Sasser and work with him. The work and studies he conducted on the identification, biology, host-range and management of root-knot nematode species of economic importance remain unmatched. The majority of research projects concerning these nematode pests were conducted under his leadership. He promoted these studies in the United States and tropical areas of the world. Many techniques and methodologies used for the study of these nematodes were initiated and tested in research projects he organized.   Joe Sasser’s pleasant personality, pragmatism, inquisitive mind, scientific ability and teaching skill will be remembered by the Nematology Community. Dr. Sasser was recognized by ONTA in 1987 for his great service and contribution to Tropical Nematology. He received the very first ONTA Honorary Member Award given by the Organization.
